My ipod 2nd generation was stolen and unfortunately I have a majorly old Mac that can't take a software update I was wondering what iphone would be and equivalent if you like as 2nd generation nanos seem got be few and far between due to their age.

Asking which iPhone is similar to an iPod Nano is rather like asking which model of car is most like your bicycle. The system software used by iPhones and iPod Nanos is completely different. Any iPhone you purchase new will have iOS 9.x on it. Current iPhones require iTunes 12.3 or later.
Ok I'm a complete technophobe and have no idea, would I be able to run a 3Rd gen nano without updating my mac and losing all my music

Check the tech specs for the iPod you want to buy and see if you can use it with your computer.
Why would you lose all your music if you updated your Mac?
